“ Why don't they have this place in Columbus??? We stopped in here while whittling away a lazy Saturday and MAN, were we impressed. Not having been here before, I'm not sure if spacing had been increased to ensure COVID protection best practices, but the tables looked clean and sanitary. We decided to dine in and the young lady was kind enough to bring our first order to the table. My order was placed second and took a little longer because I wanted to try the fish & chips. We figured on a wait because the chicken was probably readily available, being their staple. We expected the fish to be prepared to order. I added a chicken thigh to get a sample of their "famous" chicken for myself. I'll work my way from the bottom up, reviewing the items. I tried some of my son's potato wedges. Very well seasoned and prepared to perfection; crisp, yet soft. It passed the "do you need to add ketchup?" test because it definitely didn't need it. Then I snuck a scoop of my wife's mac & cheese. It was decent. Not anything to write home about, but good enough to be liked among its customers. I did like the amount of cheese and overall density of it, in terms of how it chewed. I had mashed potatoes which were quite tasty with gravy that complimented it perfectly. Definitely something I'm going to have again. The final side item was the baked beans. I had to offer some of this to my family (along with the mashed potatoes) because it was much better than what we were used to in most restaurants. It had that southern kick to it which surprised me considerably. As I said before, I got a chicken thigh so I could get the experience and I have to admit that it was pretty good. Reminiscent of the way Kentucky Fried Chicken USED to taste, back when they were good (70s, early 80s). I hate to compare this to other restaurants, but I wanted to give you an idea. The skin had great taste to it and was the right temporature and moisture. In fact, it was right up there with the way your grandmother used to make it (well, MY grandmother); that kind of chicken from which you could take a bite, then suck the juices off of it before chewing. Great recipe. The MVP? That catfish! O-M-GOD! This place made some slammin' catfish! Piping hot (which is why I prefer to dine in as opposed to my meal losing its "feel" after a drive home and cool down period). The texture on this was amazing with some seasoning I can only liken to lemon pepper. I don't think it was, but it was amazingly flavorful. Nice and flakey on the insides, with fragrant steam emitting from it after you bit into it or separated it with your fork. As good as that tartar sauce was, it really didn't need it. I went back and forth, adding sauce to one bite, then omitting it the next. I could do this for a while because they gave me an exceptionally generous portion of it (see photo). I even got out of my "stingy old dad" mode and let dinner buddies split a piece, which made them regret not ordering it for themselves. We all agreed that we would make the 40-45 minute drive out here again to get some more because it was that good and worth the trip. If you're in the area of Indian Mound mall in Newark, make it your business to drive down Main Street and give this place a try. With any luck, they'll open up a spot in Columbus. In the meantime, I'll definitely be back. ”
